Things I Couldn't Bring Home from England

  • a local pub (or two), with real ales, in every neighbourhood
  • public footpaths through the countryside
  • tomatoes that taste like tomatoes
  • comprehensive public transportation
  • cream teas, "pickle" in convenience-store sandwiches, and dozens of kinds of local sausage
  • silence in pubs, except for the conversation
  • deep visible history

(I did, however, bring home a mug and a tea towel and a coaster, t-shirts, photographs, memories, and a jar of chutney.)
