Where Coneygree Lane meets Snowshill Road, we stopped walking to look at a house. The couple who live there were leaving, perhaps for church (it was a glorious Sunday). We talked about living in old houses — our old Canadian house being younger than their old British house — about heating and plumbing and building materials, about the size of houses today. They left in their car down Snowshill Road into the village. We turned up the lane and began our trudge up to where we would see not just trees and dried mud but east toward the sea.
